The next morning, Caitlin rolled over as she heard a clunk at the door. She opened her eyes—four-poster bed, antique furniture, snow pelting against the windows. She stretched and turned to see Lindsay in a red-and-black flannel robe and slippers, sitting by a fire drinking her morning tea.

“Morning,” Caitlin croaked.

“Good morning!” said Lindsay. “They left us a pot of tea and some scones.”

“Wow!”

“Yeah! And there’s jam and clotted cream.”

“Nice.”

“There’s also a note—full Scottish breakfast is included with the room. However, it won’t be ready until nine because the cook is still shoveling his car out.”

“That’s too bad. But we’re fine with scones and tea.”

“Look at it out there!” Lindsay gestured toward the window.

They stood at the window. Cars were buried in snow. The road was nowhere to be seen amid the drifts of snow. And the only way they could make out the loch was that it was a flat space with no trees.

“Brutal!”

“I hope the guys were okay.”

“I’m sure they were. Somehow I think they were exaggerating about the sacks of oats and casks of whisky to make us feel bad.”

“You think?” said Lindsay with a laugh. “They’re definitely a couple of characters.”

Caitlin hopped out of bed, grabbed a cup of tea and a scone, and crawled right back under the covers. “What a nice robe. So smart of you to bring it,” she said to Lindsay.

“I didn’t bring it. There’s one here for you as well. It’s in the closet.”

“Wow!”

“Yeah.”

Caitlin sipped her tea. “I think I’m a little too cozy to venture out of bed just yet, but maybe later in the day,” she said with a stretch.

“I understand. You must still be jet-lagged too!”

“Maybe. I think the cold weather and snow just make me want to hibernate.”

Caitlin opened her phone. “I wonder how Melissa and Colin are holding up.”

She texted Melissa,

“Hey! How’s it going? We’re snowed in!”
